Vraagwoorden / interrogative pronouns

  • HOE gaat het met jou (How are you?)
  • WAAROM koos je dit boek? (Why did you choose this book?)

These are sentences with question words. We need them to ask a question. Question words are usually at the beginning of a sentence.

Common question words

WAT asks about a non-person:

  • Wat doe je daar? (What are you doing over there?)
  • Wat heb je vanmiddag gegeten? (What did you eat this afternoon?)

wie asks about a person or group:

  • Wie is je beste vriend? (Who is your best friend?)
  • Wie vind jij de beste zanger? (Who do you think is the best singer?)

waar asks about a place or a circumstance:

  • Waar heb je je boek gelegd? (Where did you put your book?)
  • Waar ken ik je van? (Where do I know you from?)

wanneer asks for a time / point of time:

  • Wanneer ga je naar de les? (when do you go to class?)
  • Wanneer leefde Mozart? (When did Mozart live?)

hoe asks for a way, a means:

  • Hoe ga je naar je werk? (How do you go to work?)
  • Hoe kook jij je pasta? (How do you cook your pasta?)

waarheen asks for a direction:

  • Waarheen ga je op reis? (Where are you traveling?)
  • Waarheen is hij verhuisd? (Where did he move?)

waarom asks for a reason:

  • Waarom doe je dat? (Why do you do that?)
  • Waarom leer jij Nederlands? (Why are you learning Dutch?)

welk or welke asks for a kind/breed/name:

  • Welke artiest vind je de beste? (Which artist do you think is the best?)
  • Welk gerecht eet je het liefst? (Which dish do you prefer to eat?)

Interrogative pronouns + preposition()

Some interrogative pronouns – wie, waar and wat –  are formed with a preposition.

for (a) person(s):

preposition + wie: 2 words

  • Aan wie vroeg je de weg? (Who did you ask for directions?)
  • Met wie praat hij? (Who does he talks to?)
  • Voor wie doe je dat? (Who are you doing that for?)

For general stuff and animals:

waar + preposition: 1 word

  • Waaraan denk je bij dat liedje? (What does that song make you think of?)
  • Waarop slaapt jouw kat? (What does your cat sleep on?)
  • Waarmee ga je naar je club, je motorfiets of je fiets? (What do you take to your club, your motorcycle or your bicycle?)
  • Waarover droom je soms? (What do you sometimes dream about?)

You can usually also write these question words in 2 parts.

  • Waar denk je aan bij dat liedje? > Waaraan denk je bij dat liedje? ()
  • Waar slaapt je kat op? > Waarop slaapt je kat? ()

wat voor …?

For people, things and animals you can also start your question with ‘Wat voor …?‘ You then ask about a characteristic, a species.

  • Wat voor een auto heb je gekocht? (What kind of car did you buy?)
  • Wat voor taart eet je het liefst? (What kind of cake do you prefer to eat?)
  • Wat voor iemand is Peter? (What kind of person is Peter?)
  • Wat voor (soort) hond is dat? (What kind of dog is that?)
