Family is important!

In the Netherlands we call your father and mother OUDERS. We call your brother BROER and/or your sister ZUS.

We call the mother of your mother OMA and the mother of your grandmother we call GROOTMOEDER.

We call your father’s father OPA, and your grandfather’s father we call GROOTVADER.

You call your partner’s parents your SCHOONOUDERS.

You call your partner’s brother ZWAGER and your partner’s sister you call SCHOONZUSTER.

Do you have children? You call a boy your ZOON and a girl you call your DOCHTER.

Ouders Parents	Je vader en moeder noem je jouw OUDERS. (You call your father and mother your parents)
Vader Father	Je hebt je vader en je hebt je moeder. (You have your father and you have your mother)
Moeder Mother	Je hebt je vader en je hebt je moeder. (You have your father and you have your mother)
Zoon Son	Je vader en je moeder hebben een zoon en/of een dochter. En dat ben jij. Of je hebt zelf kinderen. Heb je een zoon of een dochter? (Your father and your mother have a son and/or a daughter. And that’s you. Or you have children yourself. Do you have a son or daughter or both?)

Opa Grandfather	De vader van je vader is jouw opa. Jouw vader is de OPA van jou kind(eren), als je die hebt. (Your father’s father is your grandfather. Your father is the grandfather of your children, if you have any.)
Oma Grandmother	De moeder van je moeder is jouw oma. Jouw moeder is de OMA van jou kind(eren), als je die hebt. (Your mother’s mother is your grandmother. Your mother is the grandmother of your children, if you have any.)
Grootmoeder Great-grandmother	De moeder van je moeders moeder is jouw GROOTMOEDER. (The mother of your mothers mother is your great-grandmother)
Grootvader Great-grandfather	De vader van je vaders vader is jouw GROOTVADER. (The father of your fathers father is your great-grandmother)
Schoonmoeder Mother-in-law	Je partners moeder is jouw SCHOONMOEDER. (Your partner’s mother is your mother-in-law)
Schoonvader Father-in-law	Je partners vader is jouw SCHOONVADER. (Your partner’s father is your father-in-law)
Schoonouders Parents-in-law	De vader en moeder van je partner noem je jouw SCHOONOUDERS. (You call your partner’s father and mother your parents-in-law)
Schoonzus Sister-in-law	Een dochter van je schoonouders is jouw SCHOONZUS. (A daughter of your parents-in-law is your sister-in-law.)
Zwager Brother-in-law	Een zoon van je schoonouders is jouw ZWAGER. (A son of your parents-in-law is your brother-in-law.)
Broer Brother	Als jouw ouders nog een jongen als kind hebben, dan is dat jouw BROER. (If your father and mother have another boy, then this is your brother.)
Zus Sister	Als jouw ouders nog een meisje als kind hebben, dan is dat jouw ZUS. (If your father and mother have another girl, then this is your sister.)
Oom Uncle	Een OOM is de broer van je vader of moeder. (An uncle is a brother of your father or mother.)
Tante Aunt	Een TANTE is de zus van je vader of moeder. (An aunt is a sister of your father or mother.)
Neef Cousin	Een NEEF is de zoon van je oom of tante. (A cousin is a son of your uncle or aunt)
Nicht Niece	Een NICHT is de dochter van je oom of tante. (A niece is a daughter of your uncle or aunt)
