Masterclass: The Dutch Past Tense (’t Kofschip)
Objective: To decide whether a weak verb gets -te or -de in the past tense.
1. The Golden Rule
In Dutch, “weak” verbs (verbs that do not change their vowel) follow a logical system. We use the mnemonic device ’t Ko f sch i p (The Merchant Ship) to find the correct ending.
-
Rule A: If the raw stem ends in T, K, F, S, CH, P (or X) Use -te (plural: -ten).
-
Rule B: If the raw stem ends in any other letter Use -de (plural: -den).
2. The 3-Step Success Formula
To get the spelling right every time, follow these steps in this specific order:
Step 1: Find the “Raw Stem”
Take the whole verb (Infinitive) and remove the -en.
-
Example: REIZEN minus -en = REIZ-
-
Example: WERKEN minus -en = WERK-
Step 2: The Kofschip Check
Look at the last letter of that Raw Stem.
-
REIZ- ends in Z. Is Z in ’t Kofschip? No.
-
WERK- ends in K. Is K in ’t Kofschip? Yes.
Step 3: Add the Ending
-
Reiz- + -de = Ik reisde (Note: the Z changes to S for spelling, but the rule follows the Z!)
-
Werk- + -te = Ik werkte
3. The “Silent Letters” (V vs. F and Z vs. S)
This is the most important part for students. Many students look at the ik-form (present tense), but that is a mistake!
4. When to STOP using ‘t Kofschip
‘t Kofschip is only for Weak Verbs. Do NOT use it for:
-
Strong Verbs: These change their vowel.
-
Example: Lopen (to walk) becomes Liep (Not: loopte).
-
Example: Schrijven (to write) becomes Schreef (Not: schrijfde).
-
-
The Vowels: Only look at the consonants in ‘t Kofschip. The o, i, and e are just there to make the word pronounceable.
