Verbs indicate which tense the sentence is in: the past tense, the present tense or the future tense. This can all be done in one verb, but two or more verbs can also be used.
I go to work by train. (first person singular, present tense)
The girls played hide and seek all afternoon. (third person plural, present perfect)
