When use DE (the) , EEN (a/ an)  or HET (it/ the) 
When do you use DE (the) or EEN (a/ an)

DE (the) is used for VROUWELIJKE (female) or MANNELIJKE (male) words.
EEN (a) can be used for both VROUWELIJKE (female) or MANNELIJKE (male) words.

Persons, mountains, rivers:
de moeder, de kok, de opa, de Rijn, de Kilimanjaro…

Plural words:
de huizen, de bomen, de kinderen…

Words for tree’s and fruits:
de appel, de peer, de eik, de kastanje…

Characters and numbers:
de negende, de vijf, de a, de b…

 When do you use HET (it/ the)

(neuter words, not male or female)

All diminutives:
het boompje, het hutje, het meisje, het kettinkje…

Words that end with (in Dutch!) -isme, -ment, -sel en -um:
het toerisme, het amusement, het zonnestelsel, het centrum…

Words with one or more syllables starting with (in Dutch!)
be-, ge-, ver- en ont-:
het begin, het gebruik, het veranderen, het ontbijt…

Names of metals, languages or cardinal directions?:
het Nederlands, het Duits, het goud, het ijzer, het zuiden, het oosten, het zuidwesten…

We often leave out the article. This happens in the following cases:

  • With nouns in the plural: Daar lopen DE mensen.
  • with non-countable nouns: Wil je DE suiker in je koffie?
  • by names, professions, nationalities or a capacity: Zij is EEN docent; Hij is EEN Belg; Hij is EEN lid van de vereniging.
  • with fairly fixed combinations: DE pen en HET papier, EEN naam en EEN adres, DE kop en EEN schotel
  • usually after ALS and ZONDER: Ik ging zonder EEN portemonnee naar de winkel. Als HET doel hebben wij de eerste plaats.
  • with names of continents, countries, cities, etc.: Ik woon in HET Amsterdam.
  • in many place-indicating compounds with a preposition: naar HET huis, aan DE tafel, in HET bed, enz.
